The Ithaca College Suzuki Institutes
provide an opportunity to study the philosophy and teaching of the celebrated
Japanese pedagogue Shinichi Suzuki. The institutes are patterned after
Suzuki’s summer school in Matsumoto, Japan, with teachers, students, and
parents sharing in a program
of instruction, motivation, and enjoyment. The student institute provides
a rich and nurturing program for the young Twinkle student as well as
the intermediate and more advanced player. The teacher institute offers
instruction and expert guidance for the novice as well as the experienced
Suzuki teacher. The teacher training courses are taught by Suzuki Association
of the Americas–certified teacher trainers.
The 26th Ithaca College
Suzuki Institutes invite you to visit the heart of the Finger Lakes region
while participating in one of the most comprehensive Suzuki institutes
in the Northeast. The Ithaca College Suzuki Institutes are cosponsored
by Ithaca College and Ithaca Talent Education, and the institutes are
approved by the Suzuki Association of the Americas. The institutes are
held in conjunction with the Ithaca College Chamber Music Institute. An
inspiring group of advanced players and artist faculty offer a rich environment
to motivate our young students. Special concerts by our faculty and distinguished
guest artists provide the instructional program with a music festival
atmosphere.
Our guest artists
this year are Richard Aaron, professor of cello at the Cleveland Institute
of Music, and Brian Lewis, a concert performer who is making a return
visit to Ithaca. Both artists will teach master classes that will be open
to an audience, as well as perform on stage. Fully completed and open
for our use this summer is the newly expanded School of Music facility,
the James J. Whalen Center for Music.
Chamber Music Institute
The Ithaca College Chamber
Music Institute runs concurrently with the Suzuki Institutes.
This year’s dates are July 2–22. A separate brochure describing
the program, faculty, and costs is available upon request. Telephone:

Programs in Suzuki Pedagogy
The Suzuki Association of the Americas recognizes
the long-term teacher training program as the ideal method to train
Suzuki teachers. Ithaca College therefore offers the master of music
degree in Suzuki pedagogy and the master of music in music education
with a Suzuki emphasis. These programs are open to candidates whose
major applied area is violin, viola, or piano. The Ithaca College
program operates in cooperation with Ithaca Talent Education, a
private Suzuki school.
