Short-Term Teacher Training Core Courses

Suzuki Association — approved with SAA registration option

July 9–14

Violin Course 1A Stephanie Sandven

The 1A core foundation course covers the basic philosophy underlying the Suzuki method, setup and techniques for the "pre-Twinkle" level of instruction, preview of early book 1 repertoire, and methods of working with preschool children and their parents. Stephanie Sandven maintains a private studio and teaches in the public schools in Kansas City.

Violin Course 4 Linda Fiore

This course explores the repertoire of book 4 and the more advanced techniques of off-string bowings, double-stops, second and third positions, and the baroque concertos of Vivaldi and Bach. It also reviews teaching ideas for shifting, vibrato, music reading, and tone production. Linda Fiore teaches at the Hartt School at the University of Hartford. She is a graduate of the Talent Education Institute in Matsumoto, Japan, where she worked extensively with Shinichi Suzuki.

Violin Course 8 Lorraine Fink

This course covers the study of the major sonatas by Eccles and Veracini, as well as smaller solo pieces in the book. Emphasis will be placed on outlining the technical demands of what follows in the violinist’s study, including scale and etude work and recommended supplementary repertoire. Lorraine Fink teaches at the Colbourn School of the Arts at the University of Southern California.

Cello Course 2 Pam Devenport

This course covers repertoire and techniques from book 2 of the Suzuki method: variation and classical minuet forms, gavottes, and skills such as up-bow staccato, trill, lifted strokes, legato, extensions, and new finger patterns. Pam Devenport teaches at the Hartt School at the University of Hartford.

July 16–21

Violin Course 1B Stephanie Sandven

This course includes a short review of the basic "pre-Twinkle" setup and continues with a thorough study of the entire repertoire and techniques contained in book 1. The schedule is designed to give teachers the option of taking both 1A and 1B over a two-week period.

Violin Course 2 Geri Arnold

This course covers repertoire and techniques from book 2 of the Suzuki method: variation and classical minuet forms, gavottes, and skills such as up-bow staccato, trill, lifted strokes, legato, extensions, and new finger patterns. Geri Arnold maintains a private studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Violin Course 5 Lorraine Fink

This course explores the repertoire of book 5 and the more advanced techniques of shifting through five positions, bariolage bowing, up-bow staccato, lifted strokes, and compound meter. Advanced musical repertoire of two major baroque concertos by Vivaldi and Bach, an unaccompanied work, a concerto for two violins, and two concerto slow movements provide a variety of styles for study.

Cello Course 5 Nancy Hair

This course includes the advanced use of positions (including thumb position) and tenor clef in major works such as the Vivaldi Sonata and the Goltermann Concerto. There will also be an introduction to solo Bach suites and to more advanced adagio playing. Nancy Hair maintains a private studio in Boston.
