Course Requirements and Information
Daily sessions
include lectures and videotapes, repertoire study, technical study,
observation of the Suzuki Student Institute, individual and informal
chamber music. The schedule is intensive and includes some evening
sessions.
All participants
are expected to prepare the music in the books to be studied to
the point of fluent performance — preferably from memory. The instructor
reserves the right to change a participant’s status to that of auditor
if he or she is unprepared.
The short-term
courses are approved by the Suzuki Association of the Americas and
follow the sequence of study developed by the Teacher Education
Committee. SAA strongly recommends that the books be taken in sequence
through book 4. In certain cases waiver of this condition may be
considered by the course instructor. Teacher trainees must hold
active membership in the SAA.
Teachers may
enroll for core courses as either participants or auditors and may
enroll for only one core course per time period listed. One course
equals 1.5 hours of graduate credit. All teacher participants must
provide their own instruments.
Participant
(for graduate credit or noncredit): Participants have the privilege
of full participation in the course and perform the repertoire being
studied as part of the class routine. Core course participants must
submit by May 22 a high quality tape-recording of their performance
of the following:
For courses
on book lA, lB, or 2, two major pieces from book 3
For courses
on book 3 or higher, two major pieces or movements from the next-higher
book
Participants
from a prior year at the Ithaca institute whose tape requirement
remains the same may have the tape submission waived. No tape is
required for Integrating Suzuki Techniques with the Traditional
Public School String Program or Suzuki Practicum.
Auditor (noncredit
only): The auditor category is designed for those teachers who do
not have the technical facility to perform the material included
in the book being studied. Auditors do not perform as participants
during class sessions
