Ithaca's Handwerker Gallery became a Thursday night hot spot this year, thanks to a new series showcasing creative talent at the College. "Thursdays at the Handwerker" offered weekly performances and readings by Ithaca College musicians, writers, and other invited guests. The series showcased the work of students, faculty, and other artists and drew enthusiastic audiences throughout the spring semester. "We started in this direction a year ago by holding a series of poetry readings in the gallery," said Cheryl Kramer, gallery director and assistant professor of art history. "Then, last fall, the readings were expanded to include creative nonfiction and a play. Now we are offering music, presentations, and a host of other events." The lively series attracted audiences that might otherwise miss what the Handwerker has to offer. Says Kramer, "I want the gallery to be seen as a dynamic setting where the visual, literary, and performing arts intersect." |
