Faculty Authors Span Divergent Topics

To students and alumni, faculty members in the School of Humanities and Sciences are known primarily through their outstanding work in the classroom. But these top educators are also actively advancing the frontiers of thought through their own published work.

Along with dozens of articles in prestigious professional and scientific journals, faculty members have published a score of books in the 2003-4 academic year alone. A selection of the recently published titles proves the breadth of thought and the depth of talent found on campus.

Associate professor of English Katharine Kittredge is turning heads with her new book, Lewd and Notorious: Female Transgression in the 18th Century. Published by the University of Michigan Press, Lewd and Notorious takes a scholarly journey through 18th-century literature and social documents to reveal a rarely explored side of femininity. Her work sheds new light on an era that formed many of our gender norms.

Associate professor of politics Naeem Inayatullah's International Relations and the Problem of Difference explores how educators and professionals in the field of international relations have surprisingly ignored the subject of cultural diversity. Coauthored by David L. Blaney and published by Routledge, the book begins to reimagine the ways in which international relations can address cultural differences.

Edward Hower's novel A Garden of Demons follows a young girl in Sri Lanka on a gripping, often frightening, journey from cultural innocence to social awareness. Published by Ontario Review Press, it is Hower's eighth book.

"Humanities and sciences faculty scholarship contributes greatly to the school's reputation as well as to the enduring quest for knowledge," said Howard Erlich, dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences. "We are proud of our faculty authors." HS
