Happy Birthday to Our Oldest Living Alum

Music conservatory graduate Sara Billings Titman ’16 turns 107.

Titman, family, and friendsSara Billings Titman ’16 is the College’s oldest graduate and the only living member of her class. Born on May 20, 1894, she celebrated her 107th birthday with family and friends (photo). Titman graduated from the Ithaca Conservatory of Music, where she majored in vocal music and enjoyed playing the piano. As a student, she was a member of Mu Phi Epsilon and authored her class history for the 1916 ICM Class Book. Her love of music expanded beyond the conservatory, and she considers it to be the key to her long life. Although she ended her career as a private music teacher many years ago, until the early 1990s she sang with her local church choir and played the piano.

Except for the 4 years spent at Ithaca and 15 years living in New York City, Titman has lived in Tunkannock, Pennsylvania. She has returned to Ithaca several times over the years, most recently for her 75th reunion celebration in 1991. During the celebration she and her classmate Vera Harris Stallknecht (now deceased) were treated as very special guests. They were introduced at the awards banquet, where they received a standing ovation from 600 alumni and friends. During the president’s reception for the classes of 1941 and earlier (the "perennials"), they were each presented with an engraved silver bowl. It was the first time the two had met since their graduation.
