Homecoming Includes Lyon Tributes |
||
Lyon, who died in 1976, will be remembered in a special presentation at halftime of the Bombers' Saturday afternoon football game with American International College, and again later at the annual Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Phillips Hall. The 1958 hiring of Lyon brought a resurgance to a stagnant Ithaca College football program. On the heels of a 2-5 campaign, Lyon directed an immediate turnaround to 6-1 in 1958. His first unit, captained by John Fasolino '60, held the opposition to eight points or less in six of seven outings. An incentive was added to the already competitive Ithaca-Cortland football rivary in 1959, when players from each squad joined to donate a traveling trophy, known as the Cortaca Jug, to be presented to the winning team each year. Today the matchup is one of the most prominent in Division III as three of the last four matchups have been played before crowds of 10,000 or more. Lyon's clubs posted three straight 6-2 records in 1962-64, and went a perfect 8-0 in 1965. The Bombers had nothing but success under Lyon, who left the program in 1967 to join the staff at Army. A number of Lyon's former players will be in Ithaca for the weekend, including Fasolino, who spearheaded efforts to honor one of the most respected coaches in Ithaca history. Other popular Homecoming activities will be reprised this year, including "Dinner with a Roomful of Strangers," where current Ithaca College students meet with visitors to discuss campus issues and life beyond graduation. Also on the agenda this year are a host of other athletic events, open houses at all five of the College's schools, and sessions designed to provide information on the expansion of the School of Music and the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance. |
