Publications Manual to be Issued |
||
The Ithaca College publications office has created a new guide to producing publications on campus. The "Ithaca College Publications Guide" will be issued to all departments early this semester. The eight-page manual is an at-your-fingertips, step-by-step outline of the procedures involved in producing publications on campus. "Even though close to 700 publications pass through our office each year, a lot of people may not be clear about College policies and procedures," says Marina B. Todd, director of publications. "Recently there have been a lot of queries from all over campus, so we thought it a good time to issue a manual." Todd, who assumed the directorship last year after nearly nine years as senior editor, also believes the time is right to introduce some new members of the publications staff. Maura Stephens succeeds Todd as senior editor and editor of the alumni magazine. Her professional experience includes more than 19 years at Newsweek magazine, where she was general editor in the international editions. She was also CEO and editor of an Internet magazine and president of an editorial direction company. One of Stephens's first tasks was to write the new publications guide. "I couldn't think of a quicker way to learn about the department and the College," she says. "It really was a good way to review our processes and for the new members of the staff, including myself, to get a grasp of the vastness and variety of the work being done here." Stephens says she's happy to be here and is eager to hear about projects others are working on. "I'm always on the lookout for fresh ideas for the magazine and other publications." Also new to the staff are Helene Maddux and Keith Davis, two writer/editors who serve as publication project managers for a number of departments across campus. Maddux --- who came to publications in September from Cornell University Press, where she'd been a projects editor for 12 years --- works with 17 offices, including career planning and placement, continuing education and summer sessions, sports information, and student affairs. Davis, who started his career as a communications technician in the navy and went on to become a newspaper reporter, photographer, and editor at Cornell and other institutions before joining Ithaca College, handles various other departments, including the Gerontology Institute. Both Maddux and Davis work closely with representatives of each office, making sure specifications are met on every project. They edit for style, spelling, grammar, and usage; act as liaisons between the "client" and the designer; and follow each publication through to its printed stage. Todd, Stephens, Maddux, Davis, and their colleagues collaborated to produce the new manual and hope that it will be a big help to everyone on campus in getting publications produced efficiently and effectively. With the new guide, everyone on campus should be able to understand the many factors involved in producing even what may seem a relatively simple publication. |
