Speaker Discusses Hispanic Elderly

The Ithaca College Gerontology Institute’s Distinguished Speaker Series continues on Monday, February 23, with a talk by Marta Sotomayor, president of the National Hispanic Council on Aging. The talk, "The Hispanic Elderly: A Cultural Signature," is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., in the Emerson Suites, Phillips Hall. It is free and open to the public.

Sotomayor’s lecture will look at demographic changes that will continue well into the 21st century, when the number of people older than 65 will double and the numbers of minority elderly will surpass that of the general population. Her presentation will address issues of concern to Latino elderly, a fast-growing population group, with implications for health-care costs and demand for services. Social policies and programs designed for different circumstances and times will have to be examined for their appropriateness to language and cultural differences. Equity and intergenerational programming, the changing meaning of aging, and health care reform will be reviewed as the centerpiece for accessing services for this population group.
