The Ithaca College gymnastics
team and senior wrestler John Gemmel brought national championships
home to South Hill last month.
In
Rhode Island, the gymnasts won the program's first National Gymnastics
Coaches Association team title by dethroning defending champion
Wisconsin-LaCrosse. The Bombers scored a meet-record 148.875
points on their way to the title. Sophomore Lindsay Mazer came
away from the competition with a pair of individual championships,
winning in the all-around and vault. Rick Suddaby, the NGCA Coach
of the Year, led a Bomber squad that included six all-Americans
and broke 18 school records. (The gymnasts: First row, left to
right: Stacey Goldman, Kathy Kowalski, Kristen Hovland, Alison
McClung, and Kelly Moran. Second row: Becky Davis, Lindsay Mazer,
Tia Gardner, and Melissa Kucich. Third row: Stacey Coleman, Amanda
Haag, Liz Horne, Jennifer Gandolfo, Erin Kahler, Judy Skupsky,
and Jen Nardone.)
In Iowa,
wrestler John Gemmel '98 earned a national title after winning
four matches at the Division III championship. Gemmell won at
126 pounds this year after finishing as national runner-up at
118 pounds two years in a row. He is the only Bomber to reach
the championship match three times.
