Author, Activist Winona LaDuke to Visit

Winona LaDuke, author and renowned activist for Native American rights and the environment, will offer the keynote address at this year’s Ithaca College Professionals Symposium and Awards Banquet.

Scheduled for Saturday, October 3, at 6:00 p.m. in the Emerson Suites, Phillips Hall, the banquet caps a day of events that bring alumni of color back to the Ithaca College campus to share information on career goals and opportunities with current students. Call the Office of Opportunity Programs at 274-3381 for banquet ticket information.

LaDuke, a member of the Anishinaabe nation who lives on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota, has written extensively on Native American and environmental issues. Her first book, Last Standing Woman, was published to critical acclaim, and she is widely recognized as a riveting speaker. She was selected by Time magazine as one of the "50 for the Future," a list citing America’s most promising leaders under the age of 40, and has been profiled in such national publications as People, Sierra and E magazines. LaDuke was Ralph Nader’s vice presidential candidate on the Green Party ticket in the 1996 presidential election.

Entitled "Sharing Our Stories: Collaborating for the Future," the symposium’s Saturday schedule opens with a 9:00 a.m. alumni breakfast. The day’s activities will feature several presentations and career panels, and the banquet that night will feature LaDuke’s talk as well as an awards ceremony for alumni and Ithaca College community members who have given support to the Office of Opportunity Programs. Opening remarks will be offered by Ithaca College president Peggy R. Williams.
