Ithaca College Theater Stages Lysistrata

Ithaca College Theatre will present four special performances of Aristophanes’s Lysistrata in the Clark Theatre December 3–5. This modern-day take on the classic Greek comedy humorously depicts the eternal battle of wits between the sexes. Lysistrata will run Thursday through Saturday at 8:00 p.m., with a Saturday matinee scheduled for 2:00 p.m. This show contains mature themes, sexual content, and adult language and is not recommended for children.

Directed by Greg Bostwick, this "original sex comedy" focuses on humorous situations that are still relevant today. In this updated version, set in the near future, the women of Washington, D.C., decide to withhold sex to stop a civil war. In this test of wills, both sexes soon realize that they underestimate the strength of the other. The women find out that the struggle to do without sex is as difficult for them as it is for the men.

The cast for Lysistrata includes: Chantelle Danielle ’99 as Lysistrata, Jolie Summers ’00 as Kleonike, Karen Rockower ’00 as Myrrhine, Jennifer Herzog ’00 as Lampito, Sarah Schoenberg ’99 as Ismenia, Sheila Garg ’00 as the female chorus leader, Jonah VonSpreeken ’00 as the male chorus leader, Billy Zalvelson ’00 as Commissioner, and Jared Zeus ’00 as Kinesias.

The artistic team for Lysistrata includes Greg Bostwick, director; Abby Marcus ’99, stage manager; Ali Golden ’00, scenic designer; Rebecca Barrett ’99, lighting designer; Kelly Czosnek ’99, costume designer; and Brad Gyorgak ‘00, sound designer.

Tickets for the Thursday evening performance and the Saturday matinee are $4.50 for students; $6.00 for Ithaca College staff and faculty, senior citizens, and Friends of Ithaca College; and $7.50 for the general public. Friday and Saturday evening tickets for those groups are $6.00, $7.00, and $9.00, respectively. Discounts are available for groups of 15 or more.
