Wood Field Ceremony

Dedication ceremonyFormer Bomber athletes (from left to right) Rich Slomkowski '59, M.S. '67; Steve Klingman '72, M.S. '75; and Hugh Hurst '54, M.S. '57, joined legendary coach Carlton "Carp" Wood '39 and his son Dan at a ceremony held September 7 to rename Upper Terrace Field. Now called Wood Field, the facility serves as home to the women's lacrosse and men's and women's soccer teams. In addition to successfully coaching soccer and basketball, Wood enjoys the reputation of being one of Ithaca's most respected baseball coaches. After leading the junior varsity program for 11 seasons, Wood took over the reins of the varsity squad in 1966. By the time he retired in 1978, his teams had compiled a 233-75-2 record and made numerous postseason appearances, including three trips to the College World Series. Not one of Wood's varsity baseball squads had a losing season. A charter member of the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame, Wood was twice named college division coach of the year by the American Association of Baseball Coaches.
