Sustainability/Green Purchasing Philosophy

As a member of the National Association of Educational Procurement (NAEP), we believe in the associations’ definition of Green Purchasing as follows:

Green Purchasing is the method wherein environmental and social considerations are taken with equal weight to the price, availability, and performance criteria that college and universities use to make purchasing decisions. Green Purchasing is a serious consideration of supply chain management. Green Purchasing is also known as “environmentally preferred purchasing (EPP), green procurement, affirmative procurement, eco-procurement, and environmentally responsible purchasing, “particularly within the U.S. Federal government agencies. Green Purchasing minimizes negative environmental and social effects through the use of environmentally friendly products. Green Purchasing attempts to identify and reduce environmental impact and to maximize resource efficiency. Ithaca College encourages and promotes the use of products which are “green” (environmentally friendly) or with recycled content to the extent economically practical and to purchase items that are reusable, refillable, repairable, more durable as is practicable and cost-effective. Ithaca College encourages and promotes the use of minimal packaging and use of recycled/recyclable products in packaging when applicable without sacrifice in quality of packaging. Suppliers are strongly urged to bring to the attention of the Purchasing Department those “green” products or packaging they offer which have recycled content and that may be recyclable.
