A

Accommodation
1. n - A room or other space provided for domestic purpose.
2. n - A process of accommodating, a means of exemption, adaptation.
3. v - The act of adaptation or facilitation to a need or request.

Apartment, n - A housing option for from two to six students at Ithaca College consisting of a furnished residence complete with a kitchen, and private bathroom. Apartments may or may not have separate bedrooms.

Area Coordinator, n - The professional staff person administratively responsible for one of the two residential areas on the Ithaca College campus. He or she supervises Residence Directors and undergraduate Resident Assistants, is responsible for the overall Residential Life Program, and manages the operational functions of his or her residential area. Additional, he or she coordinates and provides services directly to students such as personal and disciplinary counseling.

Area Office, n - A Residential Life office responsible for administrating a residential area on the Ithaca College campus. The office is staffed by an Area Coordinator, an Operations Assistant, Office Assistants, and by Resident Assistants. Area Offices are located in Terrace 07, Room 100 and Rowland Hall, Room 102.

Assistant Director of,

n (Housing Services and Communication) The professional staff person administratively responsible for all aspects of the housing process on the Ithaca College campus. The Assistant Director supervises the room assignment/housing operation within all College residence halls and apartments, processes all room changes within, in, and out of on-campus housing, is r esponsible for all Residential Life publications, including the Residential Life Webpage, and supervises the Central Office Administrative Support Staff.
2. n (Judicial Affairs) The professional staff person who administers the campus-wide judicial system and Student Conduct Code. He or she supervises the Coordinator of Judicial and Educational Programs. He or she conducts upper-level judicial hearings and Conduct Review Boards.
3. n (Operations) The professional staff person administratively responsible for all residential facilities on the Ithaca College campus. He or she supervises the Coordinator of Residential Facilities in the Central Office of Residential Life, supervises the operational management of College residence halls and apartments, and is responsible for renovation and repair planning of Residence Halls.

Associate Director of the Offices of, n - (Residential Life and Judicial Affairs) The professional staff person who assists the director in setting direction for, coordinating, and administering all activities and functions for the Offices of Residential Life and Judicial Affairs. He or she directly supervises Residential Life staff working in the residence halls, including professional and paraprofessional staff, coordinates all programming, hall council development, staff recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation. She or she works with all special interest housing programs such as First Year Program and H.O.M.E., and oversees methods to obtain student feedback including the Quality of Life survey.

Bedroom Swap
1.
n - In the Circle Apartments, an exchange of bedroom assignments among the current residents of an apartment that is agreed to by all residents. Bedroom swaps must be approved in advance through the Circles Satellite Office.
2. v - The act of exchanging bedroom assignments among Circle Apartment residents.

Board
1.
n - Meal plan (required for all on-campus residents who are not living in an apartment).
2. v - The act of keeping any domestic animal other than fish in a residence hall for any period of time.

Bunk
1. n- Beds where one bed is securely attached atop another bed using bunking pins with bed rails installed on the topmost (elevated) bed.
2. n - (colloq.) The elevated bed of a pair.
3. v - The act taken exclusively by Physical Plant personnel to securely attach one bed atop another bed using bunking pins with the simultaneous installation of bed rails on the topmost (elevated) bed.

Buy-out
1.
n - When offered, an option whereby a student may request "buy out" a vacant space in a room, suite or apartment at the rate published at the time. Buy-outs requests are not guaranteed to be honored.
2. v. - The exercise of the option when extended by the Office of Residential Life.

Common Area, n - All areas within the residence halls that are not specifically assigned as student bedrooms. These include hallways, stairwells, lobbies, balconies, bathrooms, lounges, laundry rooms, and vending areas, as well as the common rooms within suites and apartments (e.g., kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms).

Commuter
1.
n - (status) A exempt category under the Residency Policy for students who live within a 60-mile radius of Ithaca College, and at the home of a parent or legal guardian.
2. n - Any off-campus student.

Coordinator of,
1.
n - (Judicial and Educational Programs) The professional staff member who provides general assistance to the Assistant Director of Judicial Affairs with administering the campus-wide judicial system and Student Conduct Code, conducts upper-level judicial hearings and Conduct Review Boards, and is responsible for the Judicial Affairs web site.
2. n - (Residential Facilities) The professional staff member who provides general assistance to the Assistant Director of Operations with the operational management of College residence halls and apartments. He or she assists with preparation of temporary housing rooms, and monitors the iServiceDesk for general repairs in the residence halls.

Damage Billing
1.
n- Charges which accrue to a student's account for attributable damage to residential furnishings and/or residential facilities that are beyond ordinary wear and tear, charges associated with lost keys and lock recores, and for fines resulting from Health & Safety Violations.
2. v - The act of inspection to assess damage charges to a student or students.
3. n - The process to attribute damage charges to responsible students.

Date of Deposit, n - The date that a student's $250 advance deposit is received at the Bursar's office. This date is no longer used in determining housing priority for new freshman and transfer students.

Director of the Offices of, n- (Residential Life and Judicial Affairs) The professional staff person who directs, coordinates, and administers all activities for the Offices of Residential Life and Judicial Affairs. He or she manages and administers the campus-wide judicial system and Student Conduct Code, directly supervises Assistant Director for Operations, Assistant Director for Judicial Affairs,and the Associate Director for the Offices of Residential Life and Judicial Affairs, and rains, supervises, and directs the activities of all the professional and student staff of both offices.

Displaced Student, n - A certain number of rooms are set aside to accommodate incoming students, for students with special housing needs, and to house Specialty Progams. Students currently occupying these rooms will be "displaced" during self-selection and unable to "squat" their room.

Early Arrival
1.
n - A student who is approved for requirements of on-campus employment, academic or administrative necessity, or in certain exceptional circumstances to move into his or her room prior to the published opening date for Fall and Spring semesters.
2.
n - A student who arrives on campus prior to the published opening date for Fall or Spring semester who is not approved to return to his or her room, and is directed by the Office of Public Safety to off-campus accommodations.

Escorted Check-out, n - A formal check-out in which a student must contact his or her RD to schedule an appointment to have a room, suite, or apartment inspected prior to turning in his or her keys (students using Escorted Check-out are not liable for any damage charges that were not disclosed during the check-out).

First Year Programs, n - Programs offered by Ithaca College to aid its first-year students in their transition to college life. Summer orientation is the first of these with programs continuing into the first semester.

First Year Residence Hall Program, n - Residential Program offered by Ithaca College to aid its first-year students in their transition to college life. Its residents are housed in Boothroyd, Rowland, and Tallcott halls.

Guest

n - Any person who by consent of all residents of a room, suite, or apartment is permitted enter that room, suite, or apartment.
2. n - (unauthorized) Any person who by consent of any resident of a room, suite, or apartment is permitted to enter that room, suite or apartment, but without the full consent of all residents.
3. n - (responsibility for) The presumption that the actions of a guest as in 1 and 2 are with the tacit approval or knowledge of a resident.

Health & Safety Checks, n - A room, suite and apartment inspection regimen that is performed several times each year jointly by staff members of the Office of Residential Life and the Office of Environmental Health and Safety as a means to identify and remedy any violations of Residential Life Rules and Regulations.

Health & Safety Fine, n - A fee charged to a student account for violations of Residential Life Rules and Regulations observed during Health & Safety Checks. Fines are progressively increased for subsequent Health & Safety violations and reflect the severity of the violation. Fines are assessed against all residents of the room, suite or apartment where the violation was observed.

H.O.M.E, abbr.- (Housing Offering a Multicultural Experience) program that is located in Terrace 02.

HomerConnect, n. - Name given to the on-line, web-based, software application that provides students with access to course registration, housing selection, class schedules, and other areas essential to their successful attendance at Ithaca College.

ID, abbr. - Form of identification (an Ithaca College ID is the only authorized form of identification on the Ithaca College campus).

Judicial action, cv. - The formal citation of a student for any violation of the Student Conduct Code of Ithaca College which includes Residential Life Rules and Regulations.

Judicially referred, cv. - (see Judicial action).

Keyed In, v - The action by a member of the Residential Life staff, or by a member of the Office of Public Safety to provide access to a student room.

Leave of Absence (LOA), cn. - A formal process whereby current students are granted permission by Ithaca College to suspend their studies for a limited period of time without the need to apply for readmission to the college. Residential students who are granted this status retain the housing status each had that time the Leave of Absence begins (e.g. on-campus, commuter, off-campus). On-campus students who take a Leave of Absence are guaranteed housing upon their return, but are not guaranteed the same housing assignment.

Lock-out
1.
adj - The type of procedure followed by Residential Life staff members whenever a student is locked out of his or her room, suite, or apartment.
2. n - A student who is locked out of his or her room, suite, or apartment.

Lockout charge, n - A flat $10.00 charge applied to the student account for each incident after the first per semester where a student is locked our of his or her room, suite, or apartment..

Loft
1.
v - Elevation of an individual bed above its two lowest height settings (all lofts must be requested through the iServiceDesk and installed by Physical Plant personnel. Bed rails will be installed and may not be refused).
2. n - An elevated bed with more than 24" of space beneath the bedspring.

Lottery Number, cn. - A randomized number assigned to a residential student during housing application and/or selection processes to determine selection priority.

Medical Leave of Absence (MLOA), cn. - A Leave of Absence for medical reasons. Typically, students taking a MLOA require prior approval from the Health Center before their return to campus housing.

MIA, abbr. - Missing Assignment (a student who did not participate in Lottery Self-Selection and who was expected to participate in Lottery Self-Selection).

Noise, n. - A sound of any volume that constitutes an undue annoyance to a resident or residents of a residence hall.

Non-smoking policy, cn. - All Ithaca College Residence Halls are smoke free. Students who live on-campus will not smoke in any campus building and will not allow their guests to smoke in any residence hall.

Off-campus, adj. - Not owned by Ithaca College.

Off-campus status, cn. - The formal designation given to undergraduate students who are either exempt from the Residency Requirement, or who by application have been approved to reside Off-campus during the academic year.

Public Safety (Office of), n - The sworn Tompkins County Police officers and staff that constitute the Office of Public Safety on the Ithaca College campus.

Quiet Hours, cn. - The published periods during which noise that interferes with a student's academic study or sleep is prohibited within a Residence Hall.

Re-core, n - A lock and key change to a door (required for any residential room when keys are lost or stolen).

Re-core charge, n - The cost for the lock and key change required for a Re-core ($40.00 per door + $1.00 per occupant key + $1.00 per lock-out key).

Regular Check-out, n - An expedited check-out in which a student does not have a room, suite, or apartment inspected prior to turning in his or her keys. NOTE: Students using Regular Check-out retain all rights to appeal damage charges that might be assessed.

Residence Director, n - (RD) a professional staff member who lives on campus and selects, trains and supervises our undergraduate Residential Life staff. He or she manages the operational functions of one to four residence halls and/or apartment areas which house from 307 to 694 students. Additionally, he or she provide services to students such as personal and disciplinary counseling, as well as developmental, cultural and educational programming.

Residency Requirement, cn. - The college policy that requires all non-senior students to live in on campus residential housing, unless they have received approval from the Office of Residential Life for off-campus status, or meet the criteria for being an exempt student. An off campus application process is conducted as the first component of room lottery.

Resident Assistant, n - ( RA) is a student staff member who lives in a residence hall or apartment area. He or she is primarily responsible for fostering a sense of community among the residents of that hall or apartment area. RAs are strategically located in the residence halls and apartments in order to best respond to student needs, and to implement social, recreational, educational, cultural, and community service activities. RAs are very familiar with the campus and can direct residential students to the appropriate individual or office regarding questions and needs. RAs regularly relay important information to the residential students in their hall community. When necessary, RAs will also identify students who violate College policy and refer them for judicial action.

Residential Learning Community, cn. - A Residential Program jointly offered by the Office of Residential Life and an academic department designed to provide student residents with an enhanced living-learning environment (e.g. Sustainably Conscious Learning Community, Outdoor Adventure Learning Community).

Self-Selection (Housing) , n - The on-line process by which residential students at Ithaca College select their housing.

Senior Standing, n - The designation for the status of students with sufficient full-time college semesters (post-high school) to be automatically approved for off-campus (during the Spring semester and prior to Self-selection for the upcoming Fall semester: 5 or more semesters credited by the Registrar's office; prior to the start of Fall classes and during the Fall semester: 6 or more semesters as above; prior to the start of Spring classes and during the Spring semester: 7 or more semesters as above).

Special Housing Accommodation, n - The process whereby Students with special needs (e.g., mobility, allergy, hearing impairment) may request a special housing appropriate to the need (details of the process and requirements are on the Special Housing Accommodation Request page).

Squat, v - The act of reselecting a current room assignment for during the Fall Housing Selection process (held during Spring semester)

Temporary Housing, n - A temporary residential room in a Residence Hall, complete with locking door, and furnishings appropriate to the number of students assigned (beds, wardrobes, dressers, desks, and chairs), which is normally designated for other usell (e.g., study lounge, lounge).

Trespass, v - The act of unauthorized entry to private property by a person (e.g., an off-campus student entering an on-campus laundry room with theft of laundry service as their willful intent).

Vacancy Form, n - A form that is issued to students who have a vacancy in their room which offers the opportunity to fill the vacancy with someone of their choice. (in the Fall semester this option may not be available to first year students).
