OALC EVENTS CALENDAR

Whether you are new to Outdoor Adventures, or an expert, this learning community will stimulate all. The opportunities on this floor will help participants to gain survival skills, leadership skills, and learn more about the environmental issues involved in outdoor adventure including the Leave no Trace theory.

The Outdoor Adventure learning community will give you an opportunity to attend both educational and social programs offered by the staff and leadership group with many of the suggestions from the actual residents themselves! Some of the events and programming that will be put on during the year may include outdoor camping and hiking trips, environmental issues programs, music and its importance to outdoor worship and celebration, and leadership skills.

Chris Pelchat¹ will serve as the Faculty Advisor for the program and will be part of the leadership group planning and implementing programs.

¹ Chris Pelchat is an Instructor in the Recreation and Leisure Studies department here at Ithaca College . He was drawn to the creation of this floor because of his passion for the great outdoors. He believes it is vital for the outdoor community to grow here on the IC campus because of the vast laboratory of outdoor experiences that are just a walk off campus. These experiences can be instrumental in the healthy use of leisure time while a college student.

Chris Pelchat obtained a B.A. double major in Outdoor Recreation and Recreation Management from Eastern Washington University in 1999 and continued at Eastern working on graduate work. He finished his M.Ed. in Adult Education with a certificate in College Instruction in 2000. Chris is now attending the University of Idaho where he is working on a Ph.D. in Physical Education, Health, Recreation, and Dance.

Chris has been the president of the board of the Wilderness Education Association (WEA). The WEA is an international organization that accredits schools to use their prescribed curriculum to certify outdoor leaders. Chris also acts as a certifying instructor for the WEA, which allows him to certify students in Outdoor Leadership.

Chris is also certified by several other organizations in the outdoor field. Chris holds a Wilderness First Responder. He is also a Master Educator Instructor with Leave No Trace the Center for Outdoor Ethics. He also holds instructor certifications in kayaking and whitewater rescue.
