RESIDENTIAL LIFE GUIDE
health & safety checks

Health and Safety Checks are required in all residence halls and apartments each September. The purpose of these checks is to increase safety within the buildings through timely awareness and removal of illegal appliances and other policy violations from student rooms. This process also allows staff an opportunity to educate residents through positive, personal contact.

During the check, the RAs conduct a non-invasive scan of the room. RAs do not open drawers, refrigerators, closets, etc. RAs may move, or ask the resident to move, furniture that is blocking outlets. The RAs look for the following:

  • Illegal appliances
  • Lounge furniture
  • Fire safety violations
    1. Flammable liquids (i.e. lighter fluid, gasoline)
    2. Fireworks
    3. Propane tanks
    4. Tampering fire safety equipment
  • Stolen property
  • Weapons
  • Drug paraphernalia

Every residence hall room is checked at Thanksgiving and Spring breaks by Residential Life staff. Environmental Health and Safety staff conducts inspections over Winter break. Apartments will again be checked at either Thanksgiving or Spring Break. The Office of Fire Prevention and Control inspects all facilities' common areas for fire code violations. Ithaca College works with OFPC to make changes as identified during the inspections.
