The Office of Residential Life fully supports Ithaca College's commitment to sustainability. Our initiatives include:
- Codevelopment and implementation of the Sustainably Conscious Learning Community in conjunction with the School of Humanities & Science (FA 2005)
- Selection and use of low-flow toilets and showers in all campus residence halls (ongoing)
- On-site furniture restoration in part to reduce the energy cost associated with tranporting furniture to an off-site location (pilot SU 2006, expanded SU 2007)
- Installation of Shower Timers to encourage water and energy conservation (SU 2007)
- Ongoing inclusion of energy conservation content in informational posters and floor meeting agendas to increase student awareness of energy conservation (ongoing)
- Use of Energy-star appliances in residence hall kitchens as replacements needed (ongoing)
- Replaced existing laundry room equipment with Maytag high-efficiency washers. This results in a water savings of approximately 50% as compared to previous equipment (SU 2006)
- Posters, door stickers & floor meetings promoting campus-wide Recycling (ongoing)
- Designation of Area and Satellite offices as collection points for universal waste (FA 2005)
- In conjunction with the Office of Facilities, established reasonable set points for thermostats in residential rooms and offices with energy conservation in mind
- Conversion to "waste-reduction" paper dispensers in all common area bathrooms (SU 2006)
- A commitment to conserve and renew rather than replace whenever possible (ongoing)
- A commitment to reduced paper usage:
- New student housing mailing reduced to a postcard (SU 2004)
- Residential Life Guide published as part of the web-based Student Handbook (SP 2003)
- On-line room selection process in part to eliminate paper applications (SP/SU 2007)
- On-line Off-campus process in part to eliminate paper applications (SP 2007)
- On-line Break Occupancy process in part to eliminate paper forms (FA 2007)
- Whenever possible, to use E-mail and other electronic media to communication housing
and required student information in lieu of printed materials (ongoing)
- Use of paper with substantial recycled content for duplicating and mailing needs (ongoing)
