Kayla Inanc, '12 Cayuga Radio Group
IMC major Kayla Inanc, ’12, interned at Cayuga Radio Group during the fall semester of 2010. Cayuga Radio Group owns and operates seven stations on the AM and FM frequency servicing the Finger Lakes Area. Located on Hanshaw Road in Ithaca, Cayuga Radio Group is owned by Saga Communications of New England LLC. Its stations play a variety of music from country to classic rock including news talk.
Kayla worked in the promotions department under its marketing and promotions director. She also worked with an on-air personality, recording commercials and learning how to write an effective public service announcement. She was able to coordinate events, such as the premiere of the Harry Potter movie, and organize and prepare the cars that went out to the local radio events. She also was active with its annual “Apple for a Teacher Program,” where she helped send out over 4,000 apples to deserving teachers in the area. Her days at Cayuga Radio Group were always different; she could have been involved with physical labor of moving event props to sitting in the recording studio transferring commercials to the radio vault.
Kayla said, “The radio industry was a wonderful experience. I thought radio was only for TVR/Radio majors, but I found that it was a great fit for IMC majors too. I was able to use my marketing knowledge combined with my communication background to understand an alternative type of media. This internship actually was really helpful while I was working with a local nonprofit client in my PR class. I was able to record and write a PSA based off what other nonprofits used, as well as become aware of the legalities behind nonprofits and air time.”
