CMD Junior Spends Summer Working with the Ithaca Breast Cancer Alliance
CMD junior Cornell Woodson spent his summer working with the Ithaca Breast Cancer Alliance, establishing a program known as the Circle of Friends. The necklace he proudly wears (pictured at right) is a training tool; each person who enters the Circle of Friends network receives one.
Along with his major in communication management and design, Woodson has two minors: health communication and health care management. "I am dedicated to women's health issues because I was raised by women and have developed close connections with my female teachers, family members, and friends," says Woodson. "I enjoyed working with Jemila Sequeira at the IBCA, and the program we developed will allow us to train women and men in the Ithaca area to talk to women about breast and cervical cancer."
The necklace is a real conversation starter. It is composed of numerous wooden beads of different sizes which graphically represent the different sizes of lumps that can be found in a woman's breast. The program encourages early detection with special instruction in how to overcome the obstacles that keep women from visiting their doctors on a regular basis.
"I began working with this organization after I e-mailed them about my desire to volunteer with them. It just happened that they were looking for someone to help develop a program like this one," says Woodson. Last spring he took the CMD minicourse taught by breast cancer survivor Leigh Hurst ’92 about applying instructional design principles to social marketing campaigns.
Originally from New Jersey, Woodson's interests include working for Teach for America and getting a master's degree in health administration or public health, with perhaps even an M.D. someday. His goal is "to change the way doctors practice medicine and help make women more comfortable with visiting their doctors."
