CMD Alumna Leanne Polachek '07 Joins Peace Corps in Ghana as Ecotourism Business Adviser
Since high school, Leanne Polachek dreamed of serving in the Peace Corps. During her four years at Ithaca College in the communication management and design program, she fashioned her coursework and cocurricular experiences in preparation of meeting that goal. She minored in environmental studies, studied ecotourism through a School for International Training program in Australia, and interned with the IC provost's office designing a pamphlet which promotes IC's sustainability goals to first-year students.
"Well, here I go," she exclaims enthusiastically in her new blog. "We'll see how I do. I joined the Peace Corps for various reasons, two of the most important being: to help those who are in need of and want help, and to take advantage of an opportunity to live in a different culture and see the world from another perspective."
Polachek's Peace Corps service will take her to Ghana, where she will work as a business adviser in the Small Enterprise Development program. She hopes to use the knowledge and communication skills she acquired while completing her IC degree to promote ecotourism in Ghana. Her expectations also include traveling around the area in which she is stationed, breaking stereotypes about Americans, and meeting other people who have the same ideals and interests as she does.
Her blog, entitled Leanne in Ghana, is available at www.leanneinghana.blogspot.com. She enthusiastically invites her blog readers to respond by closing her first post with, "Please feel free to write to me because I would love to hear from those that I know and love, and also new friends visiting my blog!"
