Jessica Woodcome '08 Lands Internship at Beijing Olympics

CMD senior Jessica Woodcome will be one of 16 IC students interning with NBC Sports at the Bejing Olympics this summer. "I am very sports-oriented, having played on various sports teams since I was in the first grade, so one could say this is a dream come true!" exclaims Woodcome.

The internship also harmonizes nicely with her corporate communication concentration in the communication management and design (CMD) major.  "I aspire to build a career in the entertainment industry, ideally event planning and public relations. What better internship in event planning could I do other than the ultimate event--the Olympics!"

Woodcome credits her CMD preparation for her successful application process. "I previously participated in the Los Angeles program with several big interviews for internships there. That helped me shake some nerves away quickly. Also, several of my CMD courses include interview skills. I've learned to treat every interview as a way to gain more experience--each interview will only better my communication skills, build my confidence, and improve my personal pitch with potential employers."

Woodcome leaves for Beijing on August 2nd, returning at the end of the month. Specific assignment details will be sent to her by NBC Sports prior to departure. She plans to stay in touch and describe her experiences via a blog.

During the past four years, Woodcome has played on the IC women’s volleyball team. "This past fall was my last season. I've loved playing volleyball at IC and will miss the team experience tremendously. I hope to coach a club team one day, while also handling a full-time job I love!"  Woodcome is also a member of PRSSA and works in the Park dean's office.

Though she will have graduated IC in May, Woodcome's expectations for a great learning experience in Beijing are high. "I love learning about new cultures. This past August the volleyball team traveled to Antigua where we worked with young volleyball players and played with their national team. I had such a blast interacting with people from a whole different culture than my own. I hope to be able to do the same in Beijing and meet new people from all over the globe. I also can't wait to try new foods!"
