CMD Minicourse in Event Planning to be Offered Fall 2008
Elizabeth King '02, a corporate events planner for iStar Financial, will facilitate a minicourse this fall entitled, "Event Venue Selection—Everything You Need to Know."
According to the course description, this minicourse will allow students an opportunity to experience both the practical and theory-based sides of events, giving them a hands-on opportunity to apply classroom skills to real-life event planning job tasks. The success of any meeting or event is highly contingent upon selecting the appropriate venue. Students will learn how to best select a venue to meet event objectives and how to assess the venue to maximize event return on investment. Students will conduct an in-person site visit and become familiar with SWOT evaluation, site inspection checklists, and on-line industry resources. Students will learn how to employ strategic methods on-site evaluation and critical thinking techniques for event production, as well as applicable ethical and legal issues surrounding venue negotiations and the RFP process.

Instructor—Liz King
King works as a corporate events planner at iStar Financial, a commercial real estate finance company in Manhattan. She is lead planner for approximately 50 of the company's 90+ annual corporate events including internal conferences, board meetings, client receptions, golf outings, investor events, employee social events and an annual fund raiser at Madison Square Garden. Planning such events requires skills in event planning, marketing and management, fund raising, database management, contract negotiation, vendor selection, hospitality, and proposal writing.
Prior to joining iStar, King worked as an events coordinator in the university and non-profit industries, as well as freelance positions in restaurant hospitality and social events industries. For the last 2 years, she has volunteered as an on-site event volunteer manager for the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation and Seeds of Peace. She is an active member of the International Special Events Society (ISES) and Meeting Professionals International (MPI).
King is also a member of the Alumni Advisory Council of the communication management and design program.
