Julie Tausend ’08 Wins Best Paper at RIT Conference

CMD senior, Julie Tausend, was awarded the distinction of Best Communication & Technology Paper at the 2008 Conference for Undergraduate Research in Communication at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) on April 18, 2008, in Rochester, New York.

Assistant professor Tammy Shapiro accompanied the five CMD presenters to the conference. "The RIT conference organizers were very impressed with the high quality of all the CMD presentations," she reports.  "Julie’s win came in a very competitive field."

Tausend’s paper is entitled "Effects of Interactive Multimedia in E-Learning On Learners and Developers". Tausend commented, "I am really passionate about my paper topic, and winning the award was an honor as the quality of competition was exceptional."

She also found that presenting at a conference can mean being ready for the unexpected.  "Some of us had to think fast when computers were not available to load our PowerPoint on. As one of the first to present, I called on my years of oral presentation prep from CMD courses, and was pleased with my success in coming through in a pinch without support media."

Tausend also has honed her e-learning skills this past year interning as a content architect at eCornell, a Cornell University business which provides online professional and executive development curricula.

Four other CMD students presented at the conference:  Caitlin Mancini ‘08, Vanessa Odenbach ‘08, Jason Soon ’08 and Michele Maciejewski ’09.  The papers were written as scholarly projects for the CMD capstone course, Emerging Technologies in Organizations: Theory, Application and Policy.
