IMC Major Calvin Smith Receives Gilman International Scholarship
IMC major Calvin Smith '08 recently returned from a semester in Barcelona, Spain, with the help of a
$5,000 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. This scholarship is made possible through the
Gilman Foundation, which is a branch of the U.S. Institute of International Education (IIE); in
association with the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
According to the Gilman web site: "The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program aims to
support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad ... The program seeks to
assist students from a diverse range and type of public and private institutions from all 50 states."
This year, the Gilman Scholarship program awarded 850 scholarships of up to $5,000 each, with the
average being around $4,000.
While in Spain, Smith took Spanish and international marketing and business courses, and interned at
ACV Global, a marketing/advertising firm. Smith is originally from Brookfield, Vermont.
