Jessica Briskin ’09 is a communication management and design (CMD) major, concentrating in instructional technology, a professional field with great opportunities. She spent her summer in the Park School’s Los Angeles program, interning with two companies, one of which aligned perfectly with her career goals.
At Karl Storz Endoscopy-America, Inc. Briskin worked in the professional education department with CMD program alumna, Marci Paino '05. Storz, located in Culver City, CA, is a leading designer and manufacturer of medical instruments.
Briskin appreciates the opportunities afforded her through alumni networking. “I really enjoyed working with Marci this summer because she helped me understand the eLearning and instructional design fields better. I was able to apply the skills I have learned in my concentration courses over the past three years in a real-world organization.”
After graduating Ithaca College, Paino received a master of science in educational technology at San Diego State University. She has been working at Storz for over a year as the main Instructional Designer.
With her guidance, Briskin designed and developed an e-learning module for the Storz sales force that included: working with subject matter experts (SMEs) to write and edit a script; recording a professional voice over; designing the graphical elements for the project; and, applying principles of instructional design to reinforce the company's sales model.
“It was an invaluable learning experience because I developed a useful deliverable in addition to connecting with Marci about our experiences at Ithaca College. Marci was a great mentor who taught me a lot about the field in which I'm interested,” says Briskin.
Paino fulfills many key roles for Storz, including: designing and developing all e-learning modules, training workbooks and job aids; creating the first-ever customer-focused training program for the company's highest revenue generating product (an integrated operating room suite); and, selecting and implementing the company's first learning management system (LMS).
"My experience working with Jessica was valuable for both me and the organization for which I work,” explains Paino. “I enjoyed establishing a mentoring relationship and passing along the experiences and knowledge I have gained in the few years that I have been in the workplace. I also think it's a great way to stay connected with new professionals in my field in order to know about new courses and faculty at IC, and to understand how this will influence the workplace in years to come."
