A paper entitled, “Integrating Commercial Off-the-Shelf Video Games into School Curriculums,” co-authored by Dennis Charsky, assistant professor in the Department of Strategic Communication, has been published in the September/October 2008 issue of TechTrends, a publication of the Association for Educational Communications & Technology.
The paper describes ways in which instructors can use commercial computer and video games, like SimCity and Civilization III, to create powerful learning experiences for students. The authors include pre-integration considerations as well as guidelines to help educators effectively merge instructional activities with course content as well as assessment of learning outcomes.
Charsky teaches courses about instructional design, eLearning, and interactive multimedia in the communication management and design program, including a course called Serious Games, which examines the combination of game design with learning theory and computer-based instruction. His current research focuses on the effective integration of technology, instructional strategies for online learning, and designing engaging games for instruction.
