Assistant professor Cory Young, Department of Strategic Communication, has authored a book chapter entitled, “Out and Studying Abroad: Unique Challenges to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Students,” which is published in the book, Educational Access and Social Justice: A Global Perspective, edited by Gowri Parameswaran and Themina Kader.
According to Young, “Social justice educators and activists concerned with sexuality have been committed to eradicating oppression, homophobia, and injustices, aimed at gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students within institutions of higher education. The focus, though, primarily has been contained within the classroom, leaving other institutional spaces under investigated, namely study abroad programs.” Young’s chapter addresses the unique challenges that LGBT students face when studying abroad; it also showcases those study abroad programs that exhibit social just.
She adds, “I would like to acknowledge Eun Jeong Koh, my research assistant, who was invaluable in terms of finding articles and resources for me.” Young teaches in the communication management and design program, including courses about crisis communication, government and stakeholder relations, and international communication.
