CMD Seniors Named Phi Kappa Phi Presidential Scholars

Sarah Brylinsky ’09 and Janelle Mackereth ’09 were honored as Presidential Scholars of the Phi Kappa Phi national honor society at the Ithaca chapter’s fall awards ceremony. Brylinsky received the Raquib Zaman Scholar award, and Mackereth was named the John Bernard Scholar. Both are majoring in the communication management and design program.

Phi Kappa Phi received 23 nominations from schools across campus for the Presidential awards, and 4 recipients were selected. All of the awards are based on academic achievement and breadth of study, extracurricular involvement, and community service.

Brylinsky was honored for her outstanding work with sustainable development on campus, and a commitment to campus affairs and community service in women's service and sustainability. She was also recently recognized nationally by The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education as a 2008 Student Sustainability Leader.

Mackereth’s honor was based on her interdisciplinary studies in the sciences, communications, and Spanish. During her 4 years at Ithaca College, she received the freshman of the year award from the chemistry department, tutored students in biology, and conducted biochemistry research with a professor. For community service she worked on a media literacy  project where she developed curriculum and taught elementary school students about the importance of media. She also taught English to preschool students in Guatemala during the summer of 2008 and volunteered with Intercambios on campus, teaching English to local migrant farm workers.

Phi Kappa Phi, founded in 1897, is the only national honor society which recognizes and encourages superior scholarship in all disciplines of higher education. The Greek letters Phi Kappa Phi stand for Philosophia Krateito Phonton -- “let the love of learning rule humanity.” Over its 106 year history the society has grown to more than 285 chapters with more than 1 million members.

The Ithaca College chapter began in 1977 with a charter of ten members and now has a local membership of 62 faculty, administration and staff members and 81 on-campus student members. Membership in the honor society is extended to students who are in the top 10% of their class.
