With 5 of the 2009 prestigious Campus Life Awards going to CMD seniors, Brian McAree, IC vice president for Student Affairs and Campus Life, good-naturedly proclaimed the communication management and design major, “the Slumdog Millionaire of the 2009 Campus Life Awards” at the annual reception for honorees, families, and friends held May 16th in the Emerson Suites.
McAree described the Award as a “coveted goal and valued honor” given to only 10 Ithaca College seniors with extensive involvement in numerous areas of campus life, demonstrating significant leadership abilities and accomplishments. The 2009 CMD recipients are: Sarah Brylinsky, Sarah Hathaway, Alexandra Litzman, A. J. Mizes, and Cornell Woodson. McAree also noted that recipient Collin McDermott, a TVR major, has a CMD minor.
In conferring the individual awards, McAree highlighted Brylinsky’s campus involvements, including her presidency of IC Feminists and her many activities to promote sustainability awareness and sustainable living. In 2008, Brylinsky won the national Student Sustainable Living Award from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.
Hathaway’s work mentoring younger students as a Student Leadership Consultant and as the president of the Communication Management and Design Student Association (CMDSA) was described by McAree while she was presented her award by IC President, Thomas Rochon. Hathaway also is a recipient of the Peggy R. Williams Award for Academic and Community Leadership, acknowledging her organization of an alternative spring break in New Orleans to rebuild homes devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
Litzman’s highlighted involvements included her years of work and leadership as executive chair in IC After Dark, a student organization which provides free late night programs that improve the quality of student life through immersive entertainment experiences. She also has participated as both a producer and choreographer with the First Year Cabaret.
As the elected president of the Class of 2009, Mizes’ leadership and campus involvement is apparent. Among a variety of campus activities, he was an Orientation Leader, a singer with Ithacapella, and an executive board member with CMDSA, famously participating as Mr. July in the Gentlemen of CMD calendar project.
Likewise, Woodson’s accomplishments at IC span many areas of campus life: 2008-09 president of the Student Government Association, executive producer of the Kuumba Repertory Theater fashion show, and executive secretary of the Unity Council, to name a few. In the Ithaca community, Woodson spent a summer working with the Ithaca Breast Cancer Alliance promoting its health programs.
The Campus Life Awards Committee recognized the other outstanding finalists who were also considered, including CMD seniors Brittany Barnes, Jessica Briskin, Ara Eckel, Michele Maciejewski, and Andrea Palmer.
Communication management and design students have historically shown marked achievement in leadership at Ithaca College. Seventeen Campus Life Award recipients majored in this program in the last 14 years. Brylinsky, Hathaway, Litzman, Mizes, and Woodson from 2009 are in good company, with Amanda Butts ’08, Josh Keniston ’08, Kristen Leising '07, Brian Dashew '06, Julie Ting Ting Perng '06, Morgan Steele '05, Elizabeth King '02, Nicholas Tarant '00, Catherine Henry '98, Jamie Pudney '98, Tricia Williamson '96, and Jill Straus '95.
