IMC Professor Arhlene Flowers Presents Paper at International Conference

Arhlene Flowers, assistant professor of Integrated Marketing Communications in the Department of Strategic Communication, and Katalin (Kati) Lustyik, assistant professor in the Department of Television-Radio, presented a paper at the conference, "Beyond East and West: Two Decades of Media Transformation After the Fall of Communism," which took place at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary, from June 25-27. Their paper, "Battling Junk Food Advertising in Cyberspace: Positions in the UK and Hungary," addressed the growing childhood obesity epidemic, the rise of the Internet as a marketing channel, advergames (free online games to promote a product or brand) created by mass-market food and beverage companies, and the regulatory environment of junk food advertising targeting children on television and the Internet in both countries.

The conference was an official regional conference of the International Communication Association and marked the closure of the European Union's COST A30 Action, "East of West: Setting a New Central and Eastern European Media Research Agenda." More than 250 scholars from 30 countries attended the conference.
