Dr. Harold Nelson, Nierenberg Distinguished Professor of Design at Carnegie Mellon University visited our school on October 1-2, 2009. He spoke to Dr. Gordon Rowland’s STCM 45000 Critical Issues in Organizations class, held conversations with graduate students and faculty, and gave a public presentation titled, “Reclaiming the Abandoned Center; Systems Thinking and Design Action.”
Dr. Nelson’s presentation explored the gaping holes left in the center of organizations and curricula by the drive to specialize. He described how systems design, which involves skillful integration in the center, can resolve complex problems and meaningfully connect knowledge from disciplines.
