For the second year in a row, a CMD senior has been honored as a Fulbright scholar. Julie Perng '06 will conduct research in Shaxi Township, Yunnan Province, China, investigating the effects of rural-to-urban migration on people who remain in native villages.
"I have personal ties to China," says Perng. "My father is Chinese and I spent eight years of my life in Taiwan." She also spent spring 2005 in a study abroad program in Yunnan, conducting ethnographic research.
Perng credits her CMD courses with providing a solid foundation for her Fulbright research project. "The focus on systems thinking was very valuable in my original research. Also the major allowed me a lot of freedom to take courses in a wide variety of disciplines."
When she returns from China, Julie hopes to find work in Washington, D.C., and eventually go to graduate school, perhaps to study economic development.
