Students Work with Alumus on IBM Corporate Event in Las Vegas
Each year, IBM corporation holds one of the largest corporate sales and training events, "Software University". When the event was designed and managed by Drury Design Dynamics, whose Senior Vice President is Peter Scott, a 1983 graduate in corporate communication, Peter came to speak at the Meeting and Event Management class during the fall. Thanks to the generosity of Peter's company and IBM, two of our students, Morgan Steele '05 and Stephanie Gilbert '05, were selected to work on the behind-the-scenes set up and execution of this complex show which took place in Las Vegas.
Stephanie says of her experience, "Going to Las Vegas was a wonderful opportunity for many reasons. Firstly, it was a unique location that was fun to discover, and more importantly, it was a saturated learning experience, due to two reasons.
One, I was able to witness a huge and unique event unfold after a year of planning had been put into it. I was able to see the finished product as well as how Drury was able to execute the event and deal with details and snafoos as they happened.
Secondly, it was an amazing opportunity to meet and schmooze (for lack of a better term) with so many accomplished people, many of them executives. Many of the IBM, and Drury Design executives took the time to ask us our opinions about the event and even asked us what our plans for the near future hold.
Also, everyone I met was thrilled with Ithaca College. It hit me out in Vegas, at this event, how valuable my education has been at Ithaca College for me, and for business people that have the ability to hire me when I graduate. Every single person out in Vegas held only the highest regard for Ithaca College, and the education I have received at the Park school, and specifically in the corporate communication concentration. Everyone seemed to be pleased with our enthusiasm, knowledge and attitude towards helping execute the major IBM event.
Overall it was a priceless opportunity, and also tons of fun! Pete, everyone from Drury and all the IBM clients were exceptional people and I had a wonderful and fascinating time getting to know a little bit about everyone and how a major event is executed."
