CMD’s Brylinsky Awarded Summer 2007 Sustainability Curriculum Development Mini-grant
In a first ever for the Ithaca College mini-grant program, an undergraduate student, Sarah Brylinsky '09, has been awarded $1,000 to work with faculty in the development of a course called, Strategic Sustainability: Intersections and Immersions. This will be a collaborative effort between learners and faculty to address the unique challenges posed by the task of communicating and implementing sustainability into organizations and institutions.
"I am very excited about the grant," remarked Brylinsky. "What a great opportunity for the Park School to actively move towards conscious sustainability—we are an important voice in this college community!"
The faculty partners for this new course development include Cory Young and Tammy Shapiro from CMD program, David Saiia from Business, Michael Smith from History, and Rene Borgella from Biology. This course will focus on the students' ability to become ethical problem-solvers and innovative leaders through their ability to implement sustainable communication campaigns, and service-oriented thinking.
According to Brylinsky, "The need for institutional and organizational shifts towards more environmentally and socially sustainable practices is a need that can no longer be ignored by the professionals of tomorrow's workplace. As concerned students and citizens, it will be our place to ensure that effective communication of ecological and community responsibilities is a part of our repertoire as the next generation of social leaders. The development of this class will ensure that students are given the tools they need to be ethically effective catalysts in the sustainability movement."
Brylinsky, a CMD student and environmental activist, will be working for the Fundacion Maquipucuna in Ecuador this summer, developing an experiential learning sustainability program for them.
