CMD Mini-course on Building Relationships: Fundraising and Communications for the Non-profit Organization set for Fall 2007
Building Relationships: Fundraising and Communications for the Non-profit Organization will be presented as a weekend mini-course by Henry Berman '74 on October 26-28, 2007. Berman spent the first 30+ years of his career as a writer/director/producer of films and video for education, training, motivation, and fund raising. He holds a Doctorate in Education from Boston University, and recently completed a certificate program at Harvard University in non-profit management. He has served on several non-profit boards, taking leadership roles in fund raising, strategic planning, governance issues, team building, and communication policy making. Currently he is the President and Co-trustee of the Edith Glick Shoolman Children's Foundation.
When describing the new mini-course, Berman commented that unlike the for-profit world, non-profit organizations are generally not focusing on financial results, return on investments, and shareholder dividends in the traditional sense. Instead, the non-profits are driven by fulfillment of a mission, typically through the delivery of services. Frequently these services are delivered for a price—like college tuition—but often they are subsidized through the generosity of donors. What compels people to invest in an organization? And, once they do, what keeps them giving?
The mini-course will explore how communications can help build and sustain relationships. Berman will use a hands-on participatory approach in the course with students choosing an organization for which they wish to act as an advocate; then, they will be doing some research, preparing letters, and "making the ask" during interactive sessions. The course number is STCM-29200-01 and students must enter a starting date OR an end date when registering on HomerConnect.
