2006-07 CMD Mini-courses Enjoyed High Enrollment

Three mini-courses were successfully offered during the spring 2007 semester. Leigh Hurst '92 facilitated Social Marketing Campaigns and Instructional Design on Feb. 23-25, 2007.  This mini-course examined the use of traditional instructional design philosophies in the development of social marketing campaigns and how instructional design concepts can be adapted and applied in the creation of social marketing campaigns to achieve desired outcomes in less controlled, less predictable contexts.  Leigh is a corporate communication alumna and founder of feelyourboobies.com, a breast cancer awareness campaign.

Dr.Tammy Shapiro presented a course entitled, Democracy in the Workplace, February 3-4, 2007.  This course explored a variety of organizational structures designed to support democracy in the workplace, including cooperatives, employee stock ownership plans, alternative trade organizations, workers' councils. Students examined micro-level processes and communication practices that foster democratic, participatory decision-making in organizations. Dr. Shapiro is currently an assistant professor in the CMD program.  Her specialties are organizational cultures, group dynamics & design teams, organizational & cultural memory, social & ethical dimensions of workplace technologies, and the Middle East.

The mini-course, Starting your Corporate Career, was completed in October 2006.  Developed by Jill Hughes '03, this mini-course focused on easing into the workforce, providing tips & tricks on creating a résumé & portfolio to win that new job, influencing others and getting respect from peers, using people's differences to strengthen the work environment, and developing short and long term goals to advance careers.  Jill graduated with a Learning and Performance concentration. She received her Masters of Science in Instructional Design & Development and Project Management Certificate from Lehigh University, and won the 2004 Nova Southeastern Award for Outstanding Practice in Instructional Design by a Graduate Student. Currently, she is an Electronic Media Producer at Wolters Kluwer Health.

Mini-courses are offered over weekends—Saturdays from 9:00-noon and 1:00-5:00 and Sundays from noon-6:30 P.M.—for one credit, and are open to all Ithaca College students
