Howard Kalman

Greetings!  I am associate professor and chair of our graduate program in communications in the Department of Strategic Communication. I specialize in instructional design and improving organizational performance. I teach in the areas of project management, strategy, needs analysis, systems thinking and change, and technology applications. In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses, I also facilitate online courses for working professionals.

My research interests include performance technology, needs assessment, strategic planning, and knowledge management. I have authored or coauthored articles on strategic planning, process mapping, knowledge management, and instructional strategies. I also have contributed to a leading textbook on instructional design and coauthored a chapter in the Handbook of Human Performance Technology (2nd ed.). I have more than seven years experience designing, developing, and managing technical training programs for Fortune 500 firms. 

I also regularly present at professional conferences including the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) and the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT). Currently, I serve as a consulting editor for two refereed journals, Educational Technology Research and Development (ETR&D) and Performance Improvement Quarterly (PIQ). In 2006, I served as the chair of the instructional systems track for the ISPI international conference.

Prior to joining Ithaca College, I was assistant professor in instructional technology at Wayne State University. I received my BSC degree in communications (radio-television) from Ohio University, and my M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in instructional systems technology from Indiana University.
