“Urban Update" on WHDH TV News, Boston

Maya Kachroo-Levine '13, a journalism major, spent a summer interning with WHDH TV News in Boston, specifically with their specialty show “Urban Update,” which deals with social issues in the Boston community.  The show is set up in a round-table discussion format, with one moderator/host and other credible guests that come to discuss the topic at hand.

As an intern, Maya was responsible for producing a piece on “Urban Update” regarding a particular social issue (her choice was to produce a segment on immigration from Massachusetts to Arizona). It was her job to choose the discussion topic, find authorities on the topic to appear as guests, and write a script and sample questions to keep the discussion moving.

While Maya admits it was sometimes difficult to sit in an office building over the summer researching immigration, she also says that watching the whole show come together was extremely rewarding. “I’m really pleased to be able to say that the summer before my sophomore year of college, I had the opportunity to produce a show on television,” she says. “On my first day, my boss told me that I would not be getting anyone coffee and I should come back the next day with a social issue I could produce a show around. That’s the way to do an internship!”

After college, Maya hopes to work as either an anchor or field reporter for television news, or as an advertising copywriter.
