Frequently Asked Questions for LA Internships
- DO I NEED TO GET AN INTERNSHIP PRIOR TO ARRIVING IN L.A.?
No, the majority of students do not finalize their internship plans until they arrive in Los Angeles. We suggest that you make initial contacts and set up some interviews in advance, but you will probably not make a final decision until you visit the company and learn more about the internship. There are, however, some exceptions. Internships in advertising are competitive and some high profile television shows select their interns in advance, so we advise you to apply early.
- HOW MANY INTERVIEWS SHOULD I GO ON BEFORE CHOOSING MY INTERNSHIP?
We recommend that you send your resume and cover letter to all the internship sites that genuinely interest you. During your first weeks in LA, you will have ample time to schedule interviews at those sites that you are considering. After you have completed the interview process, it will be easier for you to make your final decision.
- HOW CAN I FIND OUT ABOUT NEW INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES THAT MIGHT NOT BE LISTED ON THE DATABASE?
Before you arrive in January, we may be contacted by companies searching for Spring 2010 interns. This information will reach you in a variety of ways. Be sure that you have supplied the LA program with your preferred email address as email will be the first method used to contact everyone about new internship opportunities. Secondly, be sure to check the ICLA blog (http://ithacala.blogspot.com). The blog will be updated regularly and will contain new internship listings. Finally, if you are interested in an internship opportunity and cannot obtain contact information, please contact Holly at laprogram@ithaca.edu and she will assist you.
- HOW MANY HOURS ARE INTERNS REQUIRED TO WORK?
To earn 6 credits, you need to work a total of 360 hours.
- HOW MANY COMPANIES SHOULD I SEND MY RESUME TO?
There is no set numberó-it all depends on the kind of internship you are looking for. You should apply to any internship you are interested in (though we generally recommend sending out 8-10 resumes).
- CAN I HAVE MORE THAN ONE INTERNSHIP?
Yes, depending on your field of interest. Some companies may only want you to work two days a week, so you can work the remaining days at another company. We advise you to first focus on obtaining an internship in your primary field of interest.
- HOW CAN I VERIFY IF I AM RECEIVING CREDIT FOR MY INTERNSHIP?
Some internship supervisors will request proof that you are receiving credit for your internship. We will provide you with a letter verifying that you are registered as a full-time student and will be earning credit for your internship. To request a credit verification letter, you should contact Holly Van Buren (laprogram@ithaca.edu).
- WHY ARE THERE NO LISTINGS INCLUDED FOR FILM PRODUCTION?
When you arrive in January, the Los Angeles Program Office will provide you with a list of films currently in production.
- HOW DRESSED-UP WILL I NEED TO GET FOR MY INTERNSHIP?
The answer depends on the type of internship. If you are going to work in a "corporate setting" (advertising agency, public relations firm, a television network, etc.), you will need to dress more formally (which in some offices may include a good pair of jeans).
