ZENITH

Bobby Abate
, 10:00, video, 2006
In the next chapter of Bobby Abate's mysterious lo-fi cyborg tale, we find ourselves roaming the set of a 1960's evening newscast. The unearthly being has claimed a new test subject and is making use of the station's control room in attempt to communicate and perhaps reunite with his unshaven counterpart. Zenith is a celestial space, high above the clouds, where lonely frequencies and frantic spirographs pulse the dimension that separates the real from the rendered, the now from nostalgia--and ultimately divides these two beings (alter egos or lovers?)

Bobby Abate, born in New Haven in 1973, came of age in a digital underground charged by fantasy, role-play and vice--dynamics that shaped his darkly humorous works in film, video, and animation. He is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. His work has been exhibited most recently at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Moscow International Film Festival, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, the New York Film Festival, and the Institutes of Contemporary Art in London and Palm Beach. His videos have appeared in best-of-year lists in the Village Voice and Film Comment Magazine. Bobby's experimental feature, Certain Women (made with Peggy Ahwesh), premiered as an official selection of the 2004 International Film Festival Rotterdam and won Best Feature at the Chicago Underground Film Festival. Bobby is currently writing the screenplay for his first narrative feature, Magic Minerals.
