IC Collegiate A Cappella Goups Partner with the Winner of NBC's "The Sing Off" to Give Back to the LGBTQ Community

On Saturday, March 24, members of Ithaca College’s three a cappella groups – Ithacappella – the all-male ensemble; Premium Blend, the all-female ensemble; and  IC Voicestream, the co-ed ensemble – gathered together to record their own written and rehearsed rendition of Lady Gaga’s hit single, “Born This Way.” The groups are joined on the track by The Pentatonix, winners of the third season of NBC’s popular show, “The Sing Off.” The track is set to be released on Friday, April 13, 2012, exclusively on iTunes. All proceeds of the song will be divided between the Born This Way Foundation and the Ali Forney Center.

The release of the song on March 2, 2012, at Ithacappella’s mid-semester block concert marked the first time the groups had collaborated since their inceptions. Just coming off their recent success with the hit NBC show, winners of “The Sing Off,” The Pentatonix, agreed to collaborate with the groups and debut the Lady Gaga single.

In recent years, the groups have sung together for similar worthy charitable causes. President of Premium Blend, Kirsten Quinn ’12, an IMC major, stated, “Last year both Premium Blend and Ithacappella collaborated on a similar project in which their cover of Katy Perry’s 'Firework' raised national publicity and donated over $3,000 for Trevor Project, a national organization focused on crisis intervention and suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQ youth.”

Both the groups and The Pentatonix felt that the Born This Way foundation, launched on February 29 at Harvard University, and the Ali Forney Center, Housing for Homeless LGBT Youth, were appropriate and worthy causes to donate the song’s funds. The track will be available exclusively on iTunes April 13, 2012.
