ICí s AAF Chapter Attends 55th Annual AWNY Career Conference; Two Students Also Receive Prestigious Scholarships
On Nov. 16 and 17, 18 students from the Ithaca College student chapter of the American Advertising Federation attended the Advertising Women of New York Career Conference at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. This two-day conference allows student from different colleges and universities to explore many different areas within the field of advertising through workshops and presentations given by industry professionals.
After leaving early on Friday morning, Nov. 16, students arrived in the city for two agency tours. The first tour was at G2, a digital and direct marketing agency in Flatiron with numerous IC alumni. Students then ventured over to McCann New York for their second agency tour. Friday evening included a welcome reception and keynote address by Jeffrey Hayzlett, bestselling author of “Global Business Celebrity & Sometime Cowboy.”
“We were so lucky to have the opportunity to see two very different agencies. At G2 it was great to meet all of the Ithaca College alumni that were once in our shoes and then visit McCann which is the largest office of McCann Worldwide. It was definitely an eye opening experience.” said Marissa Osowsky, an IMC major.
On Saturday morning, Nov. 17, IMC majors Rachel Heiss ’13 and Marissa Osowsky ’14 were presented with AWNY scholarships. Each year talented students are awarded a $2,000 scholarship from the Advertising Women of New York. Students are selected from their host institution for this prestigious award.
Rachel Heiss said, "I'm so honored to represent Ithaca College as an AWNY scholarship award winner. Everything that I've learned in the classroom has helped me to prepare for my outside involvement in the advertising industry, whether it's blogging for Advertising Week or my summer internship at G2. I'm thrilled to attend the AWNY Career Conference to receive my award."
The remainder of Saturday included a keynote speech by Mary Baglivo, chairman and CEO of Latin America and Multicultural at Saatchi & Saatchi; a resume or portfolio clinic; and then four sessions of workshops. For each session, students could select from the 20 different workshops led by industry professionals. Sessions ranged in topics from account management and planning, creative and interactive to media and ad sales, marketing, PR and sports marketing.
