Two IMC Students Receive Business Idea Competition Awards

Two IMC majors demonstrated their creative and strategic skills in Ithaca College’s Second Annual Business Idea Competition Awards for 2012, which was sponsored by the School of Business. Jaclyn Cheri ’15 received First Place in Service Track and Deep Desai ’14 made Second Place in Product Track on November 8. First place winners received $5,000 each and second place winners were awarded $2,000 each.

Jaclyn’s “Sales Hop” concept was designed to reduce grocery store waste of perishable items and, simultaneously, increase customer satisfaction by featuring discounts and incentives on phone apps. Jaclyn said, “I based my idea on reflecting on my experience as a cashier at Wegmans in Ithaca, where I really listened to customers’ comments and focused on high customer service satisfaction. This sparked a win-win concept to help retailers reduce food waste by strategically marketing target items in a way that would increase customer satisfaction. For instance, I recommended adding recipes that showcased feature items that were on sale and ones that also needed to be sold quicker in the grocery store."

Deep Desai created “Umbreyta - Transform Your Life.” Deep said, “I wanted to create something that would really transform the way people think about both fashion and technology. ‘Umbreyta’ means ‘transform’ in Icelandic. Umbreyta is an e-ink T-shirt that can change its design to anything you want it to be by just tapping a button on your phone or computer. With just a single Umbreyta, you can have an unlimited supply of T-shirts. It's like having the future, today.”

All Ithaca College students were invited to participate to compete. Twelve teams presented their final pitches on November 8 in Emerson Suites. Students, faculty, staff, and the general public were welcomed to attend. Judges included alumnus Chris Burch ’76 and Michael Axelrod '91, along with Gregory J. Hartz.
