Cornell Woodson doesn’t wait around for others to lead the way -- he came to Ithaca College to take charge.

“I chose Ithaca because it doesn’t hold students back from pursuing their dreams. For me IC stood out because the campus life staff encourages you to jump in and be a leader from day one.”

True to his word, Cornell didn’t waste any time getting involved. As a freshman senator for the class of 2009, he worked with his peers to evaluate the first-year experience and suggested ways to make it better. Two years and countless projects later, Cornell is the Student Government Association’s (SGA) vice president for campus affairs.

“I’m an advocate for my fellow students, shaping policy and helping them get what they need. Getting involved at Ithaca has helped me learn how best to work with a really diverse group of people. I’m usually up by 7:00 and at it until 2:00 or 3:00 a.m., meeting with people and trying to move things forward. I need it, actually. I get strength from working with others.”

For Cornell, student activities complement the classroom. “I’m a CMD (communication management and design) major, and we study organizations all the time. It’s amazing to see how what we learn in class comes to life in my student affairs work.”

Cornell’s career goals are right on track, too. “I want to be a doctor, and my campus life experience has confirmed that goal and given me tools for doing it better. At IC, no matter where your interests lead, you’ll find ways to put your coursework and activities to good use.”

It’s safe to say Cornell’s initial impression of the College has proved true. “Ithaca definitely is special. The staff and faculty advisers here help you take your wildest ideas and make them real.”
