Ithaca, NY—The “Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students” has recognized Ithaca College as one of the country’s 100 friendliest campuses for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) students. The editors of the first comprehensive campus guide of this kind evaluated nearly 700 colleges and universities before making their final selections.
“The LGBT center at Ithaca College was specifically cited for the depth and breadth of services and events we offer to the campus community,” says Lisa Maurer, coordinator of the Ithaca College Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services. “We are both an academic center and a social center. We provide a variety of services that includes professional development opportunities, classroom presentations, one-on-one consultations, speakers, workshops, and collaborations with other departments.”
Campus PrideNet, the leading national organization for LGBT and ally student leaders, collaborated with the National Consortium of Directors of LGBT Resources in Higher Education to compile the book. After interviewing more than 5,500 current LGBT students, faculty, and staff from 680 campuses, the compilers selected the top 100. The deciding factors were institutional policies, commitment and support, academic life, housing, student life, counseling and health services, campus safety, and recruitment and retention efforts.
“The programs and services at Ithaca College are uniquely aligned to meet the needs and interests of the campus,” says Shane L. Windmeyer, executive director of Campus PrideNet and editor of the guide. “The LGBT center at Ithaca is viewed as a standard of excellence. It is our hope that the top 100 colleges and universities profiled in our guide lead the way for the rest of higher education to be LGBT-friendly.”
