BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Black History Month originated in 1926 by Carter Godwin Woodson as Negro History Week. The month of February was chosen in honor of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, who were both born in that month.

A CELEBRATION OF HISTORY

The African-Latino Society celebrated Black History Month by welcoming 1968 Olympic Medalist Dr. John Carlos to speak on Wednesday, February 11th at 7pm in Emerson Suites. This monumental event is free of charge and open to the public; all are encouraged to come and hear Dr. Carlos, as well as participating in a Q&A session afterward.

Contact Mia Jackson at mjackso1@ithaca.edu with any questions about the event.

CHANGE THE DIRECT IMPACT

It's very important and essential for all of you to apply to Teach for America 2009 at IC. This is your very last chance to do so. The deadline is Friday, February 13, 2009. Application is very simple and very clear. No recommendations needed just references. If you are accepted, you DO NOT have to accept. So it is worth applying anyway so you have another option for the future, but really, the issue and need for more teachers to make a difference in the lives of young children of low socio-economic backgroung and of color is clear. FULL SALARY and BENEFITS. All academic majors. You can ALSO freeze your COLLEGE LOANS.

If you have any questions or clarifications please feel free to e-mail Sherry Shen, Campus Campaign Coordinator at IC, at sshen1@ithaca.edu or Anasstassia Baichorova, Recruitment Director for IC at anasstassia.baichorova@teachforamerica.org

Chinese Jump Rope

This is part of the Asian Culture Club's "How-To" series. Come and learn how to play Chinese jump rope with us. This popular elementary recess game is fun. Trust us, it's more challenging than the double-dutch. It will take place Thursday, February 12th at 8:10PM in Friends 209.
