Thank you to everyone that attended the college's organizational meeting on Haiti Relief Efforts.  As was discussed at the meeting, we were going to summarize the ideas and events that emerged from the meeting and offer them to all who attended to express a further interest.

Listed below are the 4 main ideas that were discussed.  If interested in assisting, please email your interest to volunteer@ithaca.edu and we can then take the next step to organizing sub-committees to start doing the work.  We'd also like to know if you have an interest in being the project leader for a group.

Here are the main projects/events:

BENEFIT CONCERT:  To be held sometime in April, a benefit event that includes performers, educational elements, and inspirational tributes will be planned.  The group taking the lead on this is the Caribbean Students Association.  The planned benefactor is Eyes of Haiti ( http://www.eyesofhaiti.org/ ) - an organization that has a direct link to IC student Farah Seneque - who spoke at the meeting.  There were also ideas to host an auction or raffle at the concert. NOTE: Sub-Committees could form out of the main team for Marketing, Auction/Raffle, and Event Logistics.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM: A new student organization called IC Haitian Relief Effort, led by Stephen Burke, is looking to host an event that provides background information on the issues facing Haiti as well as Haiti from a historical perspective.  This event would be smaller but also help to promote the concert in April.

MEAL SIGN AWAY: A group of students is interested in organizing a longer campaign for students to sign away meals as a fundraiser.  An idea was also presented that a letter could be written to Sodexo/Dining Services to see if there were a way to increase the amount per meal or match donations in some way.

T-SHIRTS & WRIST BANDS: Several students were interested in creating T-shirts and/or wristbands (like the Livestrong ones) to begin an ongoing campaign that raises awareness, funds, and also promotes the concert.  One student (Jeffery Mank) presented designs for t-shirts that were well received by the group.

As a reminder, please reply to this email with your interest, as well as your willingness to serve in a leadership role on one of these projects.

Thank you again for your generosity of spirit and support for this initiative.  Please forward this email to any other interested student or group as appropriate.

PLEASE EMAIL YOUR INTEREST IN THE ABOVE PROJECTS BY E-MAILING: volunteer@ithaca.edu

With the end of winter break and the start of the spring semester, I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the ongoing crisis in Haiti in the wake of the earthquake. As part of a global community of mutual care and commitment, I know that many members of the Ithaca College community have contributed and will contribute to relief efforts.

Just as they did in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and the Asian tsunami, individuals and organizations on campus will in the days ahead take an active interest in creating and supporting local opportunities for Haiti relief.  Some people have asked where they can donate with certainty they are reaching organizations that will be effective on the ground in Haiti.  The website of InterAction—a coalition of international nongovernmental organizations focused on the world’s poor and most vulnerable people—has links to its member organizations through which donations can be made.  Please visit http://www.interaction.org/crisis-list/earthquake-haiti to learn more.

It is altogether appropriate that we come together this week for a series of events to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr..  The theme for our celebration—“Where Do You Stand?”—was taken from Dr. King’s sermon “On Being a Good Neighbor.”  King’s thoughts on the importance of making a commitment were never more relevant than they are today, as we take a stand on behalf of our Haitian neighbors in need. On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff I also want to extend our deepest sympathies to the people of Haiti and to all who have been affected by the earthquake and its aftermath.
