Road Maps and Route Planners

Online route planners have improved, but I still don't trust them and prefer second opinions.

• MapQuest: Includes driving directions for North America and Europe and other mapping services for a few specific countries.
• Maps on Us: US only.
• AutoPilot Highway Trip Planning System: US and Canada.
• MSN Maps and Directions, formerly known as MapBlast. US, Canada, Brazil, and Europre
• Multimap is an interactive mapping service based in the UK, but available for worldwide travel.
• Expedia: Maps; for North America and Europe.
• ViaMichelin lets you plan a route anywhere in Europe.
• The AA (Automobile Association) provides routes and maps for the UK, Ireland and Continental Europe, among its other services to travelers.

Topo Maps

• TerraServer presents topographical and aerial maps for all of the United States and some of the rest of the world. Service is free for maps down to 8 meters of detail. Begun as a USGS,Microsoft, and Compaq joint venture.
• Topozone: U. S. Topographic maps at 1:25000. Includes both free and premiums mapping services.

Historical and Census Maps and Other Map Collections

• University of Texas Library Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection includes one of the largest online collections of current and historical maps, with links to other map sites.
• U.S. Geological Services' The National Map
• U.S. Census Bureau's Map Products and other online mapping services
• Library of Congress' American Memory Map Collections 1500-2004
• United Nations Cartographic Section, General, country, and thematic maps
• David Rumsey Map Collection of 18th and 19th century maps of the Americas
