62d Pennsylvania Volunteers Company A: Federal Guards (Allegheny County)

Company Origins

Recruited in Allegheny County. Company mustered in on 22 July 1861.

During the new war excitement of April 1861, in the city of Allegheny, J. C. Hull organized and served as captain of the Federal Guards, a company that volunteered to the Allegheny County Committee for Public Safety for the field (as opposed to home guard) service. Because there were so many volunteers, few were accepted into service by the Governor of Pennsylvania as part of one of the three-month regiments, and the Federal Guards were not one of them. Most of the unaccepted companies remained together as a unit, drilling in one of the new camps formed for that purpose, waiting for their time to come. Company A grew out of the old Federal Guards.

When he enlisted in Company A of the First Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers on 26 November 1846 to serve in the Mexican War, however, his age was listed as 17, instead of 19. In that previous service, Hull moved through the ranks from private to fourth sergeant. He was buried at his family gravesite at Uniondale Cemetery in Pittsburgh. He was married to Caroline N. Jonathan Deer	22 July 1861	Private or Corporal, 1st Sergeant.	Mustered in as Corporal (specifically 4 Corporal) or Private (records vary). Promoted to 1st Sergeant 12 December 1862 (during of the Battle of Fredericksburg. Mustered out with company, July 13, 1864. They had five children and lived out their lives at 251 Jackson Street, Allegheny City, PA (renumbered to 20 N. Jackson when Allegheny City became part of Pittsburgh). He was a plasterer and later a wallpaper hanger. This Deer family came to Pennsylvania in the very early 1800’s and settled in McCandless (formerly part of Pine) County. Geyer lived in Allegheny after the war. According to pension records, he died in 1911. His widow, Elizabeth, filed for a pension on 18 November 1911. Geyer named a son after General Jacob Bowman Sweitzer, and Sweitzer gave the baby a silver christening mug. Jacob Bowman Geyer, born 26 March 1884, was more commonly known as Rube Geyer when he played four years as a pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals (1910-1913). Thanks to Rick Geyer, Richard B. The Marion Craig Post of the Grand Army of the Republic, organized on 16 April 1883 in Grove City, Pa., was named in his honor. Although the CWCCF indicates otherwise, other sources suggest Craig was born in Mercer County. His family moved to Iowa when he was 5 but returned to Pine Grove (now Grove City), Mercer County, in 1848. He was educated at Westminster College for two years, then learned the printing trade and became type setter for the Westminster Herald, a United Presbyterian magazine which was printed in New Wilmington. He quit in 1861 to join the 62d. This source also suggests that although he was elected to promotion to second lieutenant, he died at Fredericksburg before the commission of promotion reached him. Samuel Kissick Carnaghan or Carnahan	Mustered in 26 November 1861. Wounded at Battle of Fredricksburg, 13 January 1862. Transferred to Co. F, 155th reg. P.V. Died 1 September 1864. Samuel was the son of John N. Carnahan and Eliza Jane Clark Catherwood Carnahan of West Deer, Allegheny, Pa. They lived in Culmerville, PA. Samuel was in training for the ministry before he went to war. He is buried at the Deer Creek Presbyterian Cemetery in Allegheny Co., Pa., with a matching/double tombstone along with his brother, Robert Catherwood Carnahan, who was in the 139th PA, Company D, and died 21 April 1863. Sanford W. Clemmens	Wounded and captured at Malvern Hill. After he was included in a prisoner exchange, he was discharged on a surgeon's certificate. Bates lists him as "Not on muster-out roll." Sanford Clemmens took a mini ball in the knee at Malvern Hill, and he remained crippled, carriying the ball in his knee for the remainder of his life. The doctors feared surgery to remove the ball might cause him to lose his leg. From the proceedings of the American Railway Bridge and Building Association Convention, Convention (1910) is the portrait an dthis biographical information following his death in Allegheny City, Pa., 26 April 1910: "Mr. Fletcher was born at Whiteston, Butler County, Pa., October 14, 1838. He moved with his parents to Allegheny City when about twelve years of age, and attended school at that place until he began his trade as a carpenter. He enlisted in Company A, 62nd Pa. Volunteers, in 1861, and served until he received an honorable discharge on account of sickness. Shortly after returning from the war, and while yet a young man, he became connected with the bridge department of the Pittsburg, Ft. Wayne & Chicago Ry. He erected the well known lattice truss iron bridge, spanning the Allegheny River at Pittsburg. Later he became connected with the Iron City Bridge Works, as superintendent of erection, and served in that capacity 24 years. During his connection with the bridge company, he built the Smithfield Street bridge, spanning the Monongahela River, at Pittsburg; the Mt. Oliver passenger and freight incline; the Junction bridge at 33rd Street, Pittsburg; and the first building of the Westinghouse Air Brake Company. In 1886 he accepted a position as general bridge inspector for the Chicago & Northwestern Ry., with headquarters at Chicago, which position he held for fifteen years. Since resigning from that position he has lived a retired life. Mr. Fletcher was a member of Davage Lodge No. 374, F. & A. M., of Allegheny City. He was a man who was always congenial, and it was a pleasure to meet him. He had a smile and a kind word for all with whom he came in contact."

John N.Boucher in History of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (1906), p. 70,wrote: Edward Barry Kenly, eldest of the children of Richard B. and Lucinda (Turney) Kenley, was reared at the county seat, attending the public schools in the winter and select schools in the summer. Early in 1861 he graduated from Iron City College, and was taking a special course in civil engineering at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, when the Civil war broke out, he being then sixteen years of age. He left his books and enlisted in the Federal Guards of Allegheny City ... which company was mustered into the United States service, July 4, 1861, as Company "A," Sixty-second Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.... Before embarking for Fortress Monroe, in March, 1862, Mr. Kenly was detailed as clerk at headquarters of General Silas Casey, who commanded the Second Division of the Fourth Army Corps during the Peninsular Campaign, famous for its malaria, muddy marches and hard fought battles, and was retained in the same position by Major-General John J. Peck, who succeeded General Casey in the command of the division after the Battle of Fair Oaks or Seven Pines, and was with General Peck during all of his services in Virginia and North Carolina. General Peck was transferred to the Department of New York city, and Mr. Kenley was directed to report to E. M. Stanton, secretary of war. Upon his arrival in Washington, D.C., he was assigned to duty as a clerk in room No. 54, war department, containing all the reports, returns and papers belonging or relating to the volunteers from the states of Ohio and Michigan, where he served until July 27, 1864, when he was honorably discharged on account of the expiration of his three years' term of enlistment. Adjutant-General Thomas offered him a civil appointment, but he refused it in order to return home and continue his studies at school. Several weeks after his return, whilst on a visit to the surviving members of his old company in Allegheny City, Captain J. W. Kirker, provost marshal of the Twenty-third congressional district of Pennsylvania, with headquarters in that city, prevailed upon him to accept a clerkship in his office, where he remained until it was discontinued several months after the war had ended. Mr. Kenly then went into the oil business in Western Virginia [for about a year], after which he entered Dartmouth College, but on account of sickness and the severity of the climate in New Hampshire he returned home before graduating. [he then read law with his uncle, but didn't like it, so he joined his father's lumber business and took it over upon his father's death. ] The history also indicates that he married Eleanor L. Crock in1890. They lived in Greensburg, Pa., and had two sons.

Official records indicate he was wounded at Spottsylvania Court House on 12 May1864, transferred to Company F, 155th P.V. on 3 July 1864, then transferred to Company G, 191st P. V. on 2 June 1865. Pension records also indicate the transfers. However, family records indicate that Lepley died on 12 May 1864 of wounds received at Spottsylvania. Because of poor record keeping, transfers were occasionally made for soldiers thought to be in hospital when they were already dead. Listed in Bates as Lepley for the 137th, but as Lepler for the 62d. Henry Lepley was born 1 January 1827, the second of 12 children of Michael Lepley and his wife Catherine Beighley. Henry married Mary Jane Neely, 12 October 1854, and had 6 children, including twin girls. Lydia Amelia Lepley, his youngest child, was born after her fathers's death. The 1890 Veterans Schedules lists his name Minkin.
Curthus H. Miersch	Discharged by Surgeon's Certificate, 23 February 1863. First enlisted in Company C, 13th Pa. Infantry. Since he mustered in with the 62d on 22 July 1861, he must have left the Old 13th sooner than his three month term. He used the name Charles H. Miersch while in the Old 13th. A note in his invalid pension record, filed in 1879, indicates that "Charles H." was an alias, Curthus his real name. In Bates the name is listed in the Company A roster as "Curth's". The 1860 Census for Pittsburgh's 4th Ward lists 22 year old C. H.[illegible] Miersch as living with several others surnamed Miersch, all of whom were born in Saxony. All the men were listed as confectioners.

Algernon Robb appears to have been the subject of an article in American Medical Times titled "Interesting Cases of Gunshot Wounds," by De Witt C. Peters, Asst. Surg. USA. (Jarvis General Hospital, Baltimore). 2 June 1864. The patient was only identified by his initials, but Algernon Robb was the only volunteer in the 62d with initials AR who was still alive at time of Gettysburg. The listing "Not on muster out roll" was often the case when soldier was in hospital. The doctor gives A.R.'s age as 18, while the age at enrollment in CWVCF was 20. However, if A. R. was 18 in 1863, he would have been underage to join in 1861 and may have lied about his age. Age discrepancies are common for other reasons as well. Here is the section of the article that describes the nature of Robb's wound and his recovery: Case II. Gunshot Wound of the Thigh, and Secondary Hoemorrhage. — Private A. R., 18 years of age, belonging to the 62nd Pa. Vols., was wounded at Gettysburg. July 2, 1863, and he was admitted into this Hospital about ten days afterwards. On examination it was found a conical musket-ball had entered the right thigh near the tuberosity of the ischium, and after passing about fourteen inches through the deep muscles of the thigh, emerged outside of the femur four inches above the knee-joint. He stated he bled very freely on the field; and after he was taken to a neighboring house, there was a recurrence of the haemorrhage lasting all night. The patient's general condition was very unfavorable, as he was exceedingly feeble and anaemic, and his wounds looked unhealthy. He was ordered rest, stimulants, generous diet, and mur. tinct. ferri, in divided doses. The wounds were dressed with a solution of permanganate potassa, as they predisposed to sloughing. On July 17, an alarming haemorrhage occurred from both wounds. He was seen immediately, and the bleeding arrested by the use of liq. ferri persulphatis, graduated compresses and bandages. A firm compress and roller was also applied over the femoral artery. The patient was so much prostrated by the loss of blood that he required stimulants to be administered very freely. July 19.—There was to-day a recurrence of the haemorrhage, which was as profuse as the last. The same treatment was resorted to, and was followed by the same result. July 23.—On examining the wounds it was found that a healthy reaction had been established, consequently the parts were dressed with cold water applications, while moderate pressure was continued along the course of the wound. July 28.—Another haemorrhage as copious as the former one had taken place and was controlled by the pressure as heretofore. At a consultation the propriety of ligating the femoral artery, and even amputating, was considered, but it was thought either would prove fatal, as the patient was so much prostrated. The source of the haemorrhage was a mystery, as it might come from a branch of the internal iliac instead of the profunda, and therefore ligating the femoral artery was an uncertain expedient and was not deemed advisable. The steady pressure by compresses and bandages was again resorted to, and over the femoral artery its force was increased. July 30.— The patient is rallying under the treatment, and there has been no haemorrhage. August 6.—Since the last date the patient has complained of considerable pain in the parts for the past twenty-four hours, and while examining the wounds another bleeding ensued, which was followed by a discharge of sanious pus, and which is presumed to be the contents of an aneurismal sac. The use of the permanganate of potassa dressings is to be resumed. August 27.— There has been no further haemorrhage. The wounds have been discharging healthy pus, and are healing. Sept. 20 — The patient is convalescing rapidly. The wounds are healed, and the limb is gradually strengthening and regaining its use. He goes about on crutches. Oct. 3.--The patient is now able to walk about briskly on one crutch, and he was to-day transferred to a General Hospital in his own State, with the prospect of soon being entirely cured.

V. rolls in in other documents. Born on 28 December 1834, he came to the US in 1847 with his parents. His full name was Henry Wilhelm Ernst Roenigk. According to the 1880 Census for Winfield Township, both Henry (still a farmer) and his wife Cathern were born in Prussia, but all of their eleven children were born in Pennsylvania after the war.

Joseph Ritner Simmers	Drafted from Butler County. Mustered in on 15 July 1863. Wounded on 5 May 1864 in the Wilderness Campaign. Transferred to Company F, 155th P. V, 2 July 1864. Assigned to Company E, 9th Veteran Reserve Corps. Discharged by general order, 12 July 1865. Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866: Age at Enrollment: 25; Occupation: Farmer; Hair: Dark; Eyes: Grey; Complexion: Fair; Height: 5'8 3/4" He received a gunshot wound to his right shoulder (chest) on 5 May 1864. He was in the Emery U. S. Hospital in Washington DC for a time, furloughed for 30 days, and transferred to the U. S. Hospital in Pittsburgh for four months. He was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corp in January 1865 and mustered out with his unit on July 15, 1865. According to his pension papers he was “considerably” disabled and received a pension until his death 29 July 1897 of gangrene of the lungs, feet and legs. Dr. B. Frank Price believed it was the gunshot wound in his breast that was the true cause for the wasting away of his lungs which terminated in consumption. He is buried in Monongahela Cemetery, Braddock Pa. Born in 1838 in Winfield Township, Butler County. Married Mary Ann Fox, a childhood sweetheart on 3 June 1857, and had three children at the time he was drafted. Joseph and Mary are listed in the 1870 census for South Buffalo Township (Worthington Post Office), Armstrong County with 5 children. His occupation is day labourer. Not Listed in Bates. Not on muster-out roll indicates fate had not been determined at the close of the war, at which time these rolls were made out. Those who died before first battle probably were victims of typhoid fever that became rampant during the fall and winter of 1861/62 while the regiment was stationed at Minor's Hill, Va.

The Veteran Reserve Corps, originally called the Invalid Corps, was the military body to which soldiers were transferred when they were not healthy enough to be sent back to their original unit, but not sick or disabled enough to be sent home.
